This sensor transmits and receives infrared. It can detect whether it has a reflecting surface (the sensor receives its own signal) or an absorbing surface (the sensor receives no signal) in front of it. You can adjust the sensitivity of the sensor with the aid of a potentiometer. Robots for example can execute the automated line tracker function with three of these sensors.
